I Won at Trivial Pursuit

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

After years of toil, I have beaten my father-in-law at Trivial Pursuit. It’s true that he was tired from a large turkey dinner and I was hopped up on caffeine and sugar, but that should not take away from my moment of triumph. Although I am strong on the science and history questions, he outperforms at sports and pop culture. He knows things about the National Energy Program and who the flautist is for Jethro Tull.

A milestone in the life of Chris.

I like that word, flautist.

U-Pick Cows

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

I read about this guy last week that has a U-Pick ranch in Saskatchewan. You drive out to his ranch, pick a juicy looking cow (or possibly steer) from his herd; then a few months later he has it sent to a local butcher and you go and pick it up. This is a brilliant idea and I hope it catches on. From what I understand, most of the meat we buy in the grocery store has been raised under less than ideal conditions. Read a book called “Fast Food Nation” if you want to be thoroughly disgusted. I think it might even be a movie now, for those non-readers out there.

If this becomes popular it would encourage smaller herds for ranchers and the purchasing of locally raised beef (good things). Just try to ask the guy behind the meat counter at Safeway if you could visit the ranch and slaughterhouse where you steak spent its brief but glorious existence…

You can read more about it on the CBC or visit the website of Allin’s U-Pick Steak Farm. I expect that there are a fair number of ranches in Alberta that you can visit and order a side of beef from; they just don’t (yet) advertise themselves as U-Pick. So, give it a try.

My New Job

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

After overwhelming requests to tell about my new job…

I work at a company called Advanced Integrated Microsystems. It is a nanotechnology company and we are in the process of setting up manufacturing bead matrix spray emitters for us in mass spectrometry. There are only a few other guys, so the work environment is very nice.

Goodbye Hotmail

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Finally, the day has come when I have deleted my Hotmail account. It has caused me no end of trouble trying to always check that account for the three e-mails I receive there every year, but always having to install special programs because they don’t support POP…and the programs never work properly because they only want you to use Outlook…

Well, no more! I changed my MSN account to a non-Hotmail account and now I’m free forever!
